OK. I was cooking dinner tonight for my family. The girls were both in the shower. They had been outside playing in the yard and barn and were an absolute disaster. Too dirty to sit at the dinner table! My husband was still outside fixing something in the barn. My son was amusing himself in the cupboard, which I let him do frequently while I am cooking. He had cereal boxes out and was stacking them like blocks. I don’t typically let him in this particular cupboard because there are several glass jars he can get his hands on easily. However, I was cooking on the stove and didn’t want him to be near the hot pans. So I left him go.
Then I hear it. WHOOSH……giggling ensued. “Uh oh,” one of the few words he knows.
I look around the cupboard door, “ugh!” more giggling, from me this time. Oh my! A very brief thought crosses my mind, do I get mad or dash for the camera? The camera, of course. The closest camera was my phone. Not the best photos, but I didn’t want to the miss the moment.
Mmm..sugar, he must be thinking. I wonder why mommy never feeds me this junk?
By the time my husband got in and saw the mess, all three kids and the dog were dining on the Fruit Loops all over the floor (and laughing hysterically). My husband wasn’t that impressed, but he gave in to the laughter and popped a couple of bites in his mouth too before cleaning them up.
So it begs the question, which parent are you? The one that laughs and dashes for the camera or the one that gets frustrated at the mess? 99% of the time I roll with the punches and laugh. I mean, I let him play with the cereal boxes. Why should I be surprised or frustrated that he got them open and dumped it all out? Besides, no one can deny how funny it was! Especially when you saw how delighted he was with himself and how happy those colorful sugary circles made him!
My husband, on the other hand, is the one that typically can’t handle the mess and loses his cookies when things go wrong. I am not picking at him. I am just suggesting this..
