Nature with Jerry #4 – Hooded Merganser

This is a male hooded merganser. Of course he is more flashy and beautiful than the female. Just look at that crest!
It may seem odd, but this duck prefers the forest! They seek wooded wetlands to raise young and lay eggs in tree cavities much like our wood ducks do.

Isn’t that eye mesmerizing?

  9. Oh love these guys but I only see them visiting the pond in migration.. They stop, fish, nap and move on. I am hoping to get some wood ducks to nest in our nesting box, but the starlings have been chasing them out. We haven’t had a brood of woodies on the pond in several years and I love them…Michelle from Nature Notes,,
