THINK SPRING, PEEPERS.
These spring peepers are the sound so many of us listen for here in Ohio to tell us that spring has arrived. Interestingly though, this little frog can often be heard here in the winter. They take refuge in the leaf litter of the forest floor during the winter. They have special sugars in their body that act like anti-freeze, allowing them to stay above the frost line during the winter months and keep from completely freezing solid.
However, when warm winter days arrived, like last weekend when it hit 60 (!) here in Ohio they thaw out and can be heard singing!
